Delhi
The capital state of India is a vast urban sprawl of a conglomeration of several distinct enclaves including Old Delhi and Gurgaon. New Delhi, with its wide avenues, grand vistas, and colonial mansions built by the British in the 1930’s, made it the Imperial capital. Today, New Delhi has government buildings and also houses, all the embassies. The picturesque 12th century ruins of citadels built by the first Islam rulers can be seen in the effluent new middle class suburbs of South Delhi. Delhi holds a fascinating diversity in the fact that it is largely a city of migrants : denim clad youngsters rubbing shoulders with robed sadhus, bullock carts travelling along with the latest luxury cars dot the city and its fringes.
